Poland’s Pavilion Tradition promoting message to be spread by means of state-of-the-art communication systems

In the middle of EXPO 2015 fair grounds Poland’s Pavilion is being constructed – a place which is going to be the main arena for presenting Poland during this year’s Universal Exposition. The Pavilion’s architectural concept was developed in Warsaw by the designers of 2pm architectural firm, and the exhibition scenario was written by Platige Image. The extensive content of the Polish exhibition is going to be presented in an innovative form by means of multimedia.

The Polish Pavilion is going to be the fourth biggest at this year’s the Expo. It is going to be surrounded by Italian, French, Dutch or Vatican pavilions which are being constructed nearby.

- The motto of the Polish exhibition: „Abbiate ogni speranza, voi che entrate!” (non-literally translated to: „Fill yourselves with all hope, ye who enter here’) is an intentional paraphrase of a famous Dante’s line from „Divine Comedy”. Our motto implies a promise that every visitor entering our pavilion is going to find there what is good for him or her and what inspires hope – the world of vital energy. In a word – optimism.  And why so? Because we are in Italy, where Dante Aligheri is worshiped as a poet of all time. By that reference we want to celebrate the 750th anniversary of Dante’s birth, which falls in the year 2015 – the time of Universal Exposition in Italy, explains Sławomir Majman, Commissioner General of the Polish Section of EXPO Milano 2015.

The Design

The Polish Pavilion is going to attract visitors with an exceptional facade designed by Warsaw architects of 2pm architectural firm. It is an imitation of a characteristic Polish landscape, namely an apple orchard, surrounded by mirrors, the inside being hidden behind a simple openwork made of the imitations of rustic apple crates. This is a creative way for how Polish agri-food sector traditions could be reflected in the design and trigger associations with apples which are the export hit of Polish agriculture. Poland is the European leader in apple production and the third greatest apple producer worldwide. At the same time, Poland is unquestionably the leading worldwide apple exporter. Its annual production amounts to 3 million tons, of which 1.2 million tons are exported.

The design was selected out of 59 designs which participated in a contest organized by the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency.

Exhibition Scenario

The exhibition to be presented in the Polish Pavilion will on the one hand focus on cultural associations which are shared by both Polish and Italian nations, such as the importance of family ties or hospitality, while putting a spotlight on the achievements of Polish agri-food industry on the other hand. A visual theme is represented by the famous Roman relief carving Bocca della Verità (The Mouth of Truth).

 - Polish exhibition will be modern in terms of technology as well as in terms of message to convey.  We make use of the latest trends of design, music and popular culture, and we employ advanced multimedia technologies. We are going to promote Polish economy by showing its impetus, innovativeness and global importance, says Krzysztof Noworyta, a representative of Platige Image – the general contractor responsible for the scenario of the Polish exhibition.

The entry into the Polish Pavilion will lead through a tall and narrow aperture which takes the visitors to a bucolic apple orchard inspired by Mehoffer’s painting „Weird Garden”. The garden is full of audiovisual references to the poems by Wisława Szymborska which are specially admired in Italy. A narrative on the Polish food heritage to be told through symbols and picturesque descriptions of values, traditions and economy is going to be launched out on nearly 1400 square meters of exhibition space, where the visitors will be able to enjoy a restaurant, a shop, a cinema hall, multimedia installation presenting the Polish agri-food sector, interactive playground or a place for temporary exhibitions to be used i.a. by particular regions of Poland.

The exhibition space in the Poland’s Pavilion will be used for the purposes of permanent exhibition as well as for special events, a list of which is being updated at www.expo.gov.pl.
